PUBLIC NOTE regarding the end of the contractual relationship between the United States Department of Commerce and ICANN, in relation to the IANA stewardship transition

In virtue of the expiration of the contract between the United States Department of Commerce and the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), relatively to the stewardship of the IANA functions operation

hereby

1) PRAISES the importance of the transition and EMPHASIZES that ulterior discussions regarding future enhancements to the transition need to involve the participation of all stakeholders.

2) RECALLS that the new era that has begun shall further proceed with discussions about several aspects inherent to the operation of ICANN, among which stand issues such as human rights, the effective engagement of stakeholders and jurisdiction.

3) REAFFIRMS its willingness to closely and actively follow the above mentioned discussions within the global Internet community, upholding the principle of collaborative and democratic Internet governance, with the participation of all stakeholders from civil society, the business sector, the technical and scientific community and governments.

4) RENEWS its commitment to the NETmundial Multistakeholder Statement, which provides the fundamental normative guidance for the transition, and HIGHLIGHTS that CGI.br will work with the global Internet community to reassure that the future of IANA be fully aligned with the NETmundial Statement. In particular, UNDERSCORES the aspiration comprised therein according to which “It is expected that the process of globalization of ICANN speeds up leading to a truly international and global organization serving the public interest with clearly implementable and verifiable accountability and transparency mechanisms that satisfy requirements from both internal stakeholders and the global community. The active representation from all stakeholders in the ICANN structure from all regions is a key issue in the process of a successful globalization.”
